Hi! I'm Mitch Waite, a London based lighting designer. Since graduating in 2008 with a degree in Business Administration (BBA Hons) plus a side dabbling in French, I have been working for a top lighting manufacturer in the city. Here I have had the opportunity to complete the LIF Advanced lighting courses. Make yourself at home, browse my portfolio and head on over to my blog for some of my latest ramblings if you have time.
As you’ve probably noticed, I’m a film geek… I’m heavily into films by Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh and Michael Mann. You can a see a list of my top ten favourites here.
TV-wise, it’s all about Mad Men, The Sopranos, 24, Boardwalk Empire, Califonication and The Office.
I’ve played the guitar since I was about the magical age of 13, and at the moment am wielding a cherry red Epiphone Dot.

Moneyball first surprised me when I heard that it was nominated for Best Picture at the 2012 Oscars. After a quick first glimpse at its trailer and TV spots I was under the impression it would be more a situation, feel-good “dramedy”. Maybe going in with this naive frame of mind was beneficial, as the film I actually saw was a touching story of persistence, hope and self-worth. Yes it has its light moments of relief, but it’s not an underdog story akin to The Fighter or Remember The Titans. In fact, at its core it’s not even about the players or the game itself. It’s about overcoming the odds and working to make it mean something rather than the annual salary.
I recently invested some monies in a DSLR camera! All I’ve ever used before is your standard digital camera or my iPhone. It was about that time to upgrade my Sony Cybershot and slowly but surely I “justifiably” increased my budget to future proof myself. I could have spent less if I wanted it purely for still photography, but it was the filming aspect I was chasing a bit more. The iPhone is great and offers HD resolutions but it allows a limited control over your shots. It was a clear split decision between the Nikon D3100 and the Canon EOS 550D which are both capable of 1080p HD video recording. After a long period of researching the net and testing out the cameras in-store, I sided with the Canon. A) It offers 24fps at 1080p (for that cinematic effect) and B) the lenses and camera chips are created with higher quality standard testing. The Nikon was tempting because of it’s cheaper price, but I discovered the box contents miss certain components such as a USB cable. So all in all the prices would have balanced out with the Canon almost.
The folks over at the Dark Knight Rises.com have kick-started the viral campaign in the run up to the movie’s July 20th release date. From the link, it’s a collection of police files and an arrest warrant on “the vigilante know as Batman” from the desk of one of Gotham City’s finest. At the end of the document it details a list of locations across the world, 5 of which are here in London. Every time someone tweets a picture with the hashtag #tdkr07202012 of the findings at the location, a frame is unlocked from what looks like the final trailer for the film. The nearest one to me would be the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane in Shoreditch which I investigated earlier and is the image for this blog post (click for a larger version).
“Escape From New York in space” was how I envisaged this movie, unfortunately I was disappointed. After the interestingly fresh opening titles of Guy Pearce’s punchy interrogation, Lockout had all of the aspirations to be the Saturday night roller coaster it should have been. However, after a let down of one of the poorest uses of CGI I’ve ever seen, the film struggles to re-ignite the dead fuse. It involves a motorcycle chase out of 2079 New York which is reminiscent of something from a bad 1990′s music video attempt at sci-fi.
